I'd seen it progress on Instagram.
Popped in IRL once: it looked like they’d turned the building inside out.
Then, finally, I got my proposal accepted. Time to join in.
Bought myself a new pair of gloves and excavated a lunch box from the corner cupboard.
I got there just before the agreed time, but felt like I’d arrived late…
The font was boarded up, daily team baptisms had been taking place in the river. Sins and lime dust washed away together.
There was evidence of a coffee and custard cream communion.
No rings were being swapped at the OSB altar. However, the wall plate had been exchanged.
An energy drink soundtrack helped the scaffolders adjust the church’s sheet metal dress.
No bride groom’s shoes with amusing text on the soles either, just scruffy boots.
No string quartet played inside for the guests, just a podcast through a wireless speaker.
But I was there now, fully committed to this relationship.
And the only thing being led up the aisle that first day, was the cement mixer.
